The region / Natural Features

The primary feature of nature in the area is Lake Balaton, the largest sweet water lake of Central Europe 600 km2.

This is one of our country's greatest natural treasure. Its attraction is due to its tepid water, favourable climate and diverse nature. The bath resorts as well as the town were formed due to these favourable conditions.



This section of the Balaton's shore between Zamárdi and Balatonszárszó is unique in that the water surface is the thinnest here. Since the hill ridges running along here reach out as far as the edge of the lake, it is possible to see as long as 200 km of the shoreline. These natural characteristics almost literally offered the opportunity to turn Földvárpuszta into a bath resort. One of the unique features of the development of Balatonföldvár is that is happened in the reverse, since it was first a bath resort and only became a community afterwards.

The town has a rather scarce natural vegetation, wich is hence a result of conscious human effort, such as planting and replacing lines of trees (sycamore and chestnut). The town's leaderschip also takes great care of lighting, due to wich the city has received a number of prestigious awards.
